Training of extension workers on 4R nutrient stewardship and the Nutrient Expert tool, Kenya

IPNI in collaboration with Agrium and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) CGIAR Research program on maize carried out a training on the 4R nutrient stewardship and the Nutrient Expert decision support tool in Siaya sub – county, Kenya on the 15th and 16th of May 2014. The training brought together extension officers, agro dealers and researchers and focused on the 4 rights of fertilizer management, importance of fertilizer in crop production, different fertilizer application methods as well as their advantages and disadvantages, developing nutrient recommendations, principles of Site-Specific Nutrient Management (SSNM), estimating fertilizer requirements and agronomic efficiency and an introduction to the Nutrient Expert Decision Support Tool. The participants were particularly enthusiastic about the nutrient expert tool and its ability to provide farmers with site specific fertilizer recommendations. A follow up of the workshop is to be conducted in Embu, Kenya later on in the year 2014.
